A billiard table is a wonderful way to entertain. Billiard tables are easy to use and provide an effective focal point in a room.
How do you begin shopping for a billiard table?
There are many factors that you need to consider when you decide to purchase a billiard table. Do you know what size you need, how much space your billiard table will need? Let's go over the basic aspects of a billiard table:
Construction
Solid wood and three pc. slate is advised and preferred by many billiard players. The Billiard Congress of America requires 1" thick slate for tournament play. There are inferior products using particle board but these should be considered "economy".
Slate
A good billiard table will have 1" minimum and three pc. slate. Slate is rock mined from a quarry, it is used due to it's density and ability to shape for a flat playing surface once leveled. Three areas of the world product slate for billiard tables, Brazil, Italy and China. Chinese slate tends to be a little less flat than Brazilian and Italian.
Cushions
This can be a tough area. The bumpers on a billiard table all appear the same but they are not. The majority of rubber used in cushions is cheap and gets hard in a short time depending on the environment. Very few manufacturers actually put any effort into finding good rubber, the two most notable are Olhausen Billiards and Brunswick Billiards, our experience with the rest of the billiard table manufacturers varies greatly.
Size
Standard sizes of billiard tables are 7 ft. 8 ft. and 9 ft. are the most common sizes for the home however 9 ft. tends to be a little less common. Other sizes of billiard tables include 8.5 ft. 10 ft. and 12 ft. in the US.
Warranty
Warranties vary also if you are buying a new billiard table read the warranty carefully. Many manufacturers do not cover some expensive items of the billiard table.
Finish
Only a few billiard manufacturers actually put a good effort into their finishes, many of them flake off and are not durable like a good piece of furniture, you should find a billiard table that can withstand a little wear and tear on the finish.
Billiard brands
Some billiard brands are listed here: Olhausen Billiards, Brunswick Billiards, Valley Billiards (1pc. slates), Connelly Billiards, Golden West Billiards, KGI, presidential, American Heirloom and more.
